Since 1982, the U.S. Department of Education has named National Blue Ribbon Schools — schools recognized as either "Exemplary High-Performing" or "Exemplary Achievement Gap-Closing" based on state assessments and a rigorous application. Only a small fraction of America's schools have ever earned one.
